Setting your cookie exchange rules
Having a set of instructions (or rules) for your guests will help your
cookie exchange run smoothly.  Instructions are also helpful for
anyone who has never attended a cookie exchange before.  Here
are some great rules to start with
[hosting tips are included in red]:

Christmas Tree Cookie Exchange Display
You can have as many or as little rules as you
like.  The more you can explain, the better it will
be for first time guests.

How to Participate:
A cookie exchange means that you come with six dozen cookies and you leave with a
variety of six dozen different ones (not including your own). [whether or not you let
guests take their own cookie home is up to you]

Please bring six dozen homemade cookies arranged on a festive display (be creative -
prize for best arrangement).  "No-bake" cookies are welcome.  [whether or not you
allow "no-bake" cookies is up to you]  *Looking for gluten-free resources?

The theme is Holiday Cookies.  Think beyond chocolate chip.  [adjust the theme as
needed]

Burned the cookies?  Stressed beyond belief?  Your secret is safe with me!  Just head
over to the bakery department and you're done!  [the Holidays can be very busy for
some people.  Offering an easier way to participate might increase the number of
guests who are able to attend]

Does six dozen sound like a lot?  Most recipes yield 3-6 dozen, so you'll only have to
make 1-2 batches.  (or 3 if your kids eat the first one)

Display help:  [include this part is you are having a cookie display contest]
Displays can be as simple or as detailed as you want.

Think festive and themed, perhaps coordinated with your cookie choice.

Displays may contain electricity (think lights).  The use of water (like fountains) and
candles are not allowed.  Displays can be no larger than 2' x 2' x 2' and all cookies
must fit on the display at one time. [if your friends get real competitive, you may need
some stricter rules about the display!]

Try to avoid glitter on your display.  Glitter is nice to look at, but not nice to eat!  [this
is so true!]

Tips:
Try to bake your cookies 2-3 days in advance.  This will allow your cookies time to
"cure"  and will prevent them from sticking together.  (And saves you time the day of
the party)

If you know what cookie you're going to make, let us know so we can try to avoid
duplicates.  (Use a tried and true recipe.  New recipes that don't turn out can add to
the holiday stress)

To make it fun and fair for everyone who attends, please follow the guidelines.  You
are welcome to come to the party without participating in the cookie exchange, but
what fun is that?
